Not tea, strictly. But it is what you are offered, and so it is what you drink.
Guarapo de papelón is unrefined cane sugar dissolved in water with lime. Hot or cold, depending on the day, depending on what the kitchen has. It is not, in any technical sense, a tea. It is, in every other sense, what you drink in a Venezuelan kitchen when you arrive, when you sit down, and when you are about to say something serious.
She made it without asking. I drank it without asking. The kindness of being offered anything at all, in a city that is having a hard time, is not a small thing.
