Field note № 9
Andean mint, all grown up.
The fog came in off the Pacific the way it does. The cup warmed my hands first.
Muña is what Andean mint becomes when it grows up at altitude. Stronger than peppermint, more medicinal, slightly anise. The Quechua have used it for upset stomachs and altitude sickness for longer than anyone has been writing things down. Lima is sea level, so I had no excuse — but the fog was excuse enough.
The café faced an alley with a mural on it. The mural was peeling. The muña was hot.
