Field note № 12

Nice, France · July 6, 2025

Verveine is the French pretending to be healthy.

The flower market was packing up. The waiter had the patience of someone who lives near the sea.

Verveine is dried lemon verbena, lemony in the way lemons aren't, and it is what the French drink after a meal when they have made too many decisions earlier in the day. It came in a glass cup on a metal tray. The mistral was doing nothing in particular.

Below me, a man was loading roses into a van. He looked, briefly, like he had also been making too many decisions.
