Ordering tea two blocks from a beer hall is a question, not an order.

The waitress brought it without comment. The fact of the beer hall hung in the air anyway — I could hear a brass band losing and finding the key. The Kräutertee was chamomile and fennel and something the menu called Bergkräuter, mountain herbs. It tasted like a meadow that someone had thought hard about.

Two tables over, a couple ordered Weißbier. They looked at me, briefly, the way you look at someone making a choice you wouldn't.
